The detention centre was built in 1894 and had a number of detention cells to house soldiers who had committed criminal offences. After the end of the First World War, it continued to be used as a prison by the French occupying army. When the Wehrmacht moved into Germersheim in 1936, the detention building was extended to become a Wehrmacht prison, incorporating neighbouring parts of the building. After the end of the war, the French occupation set up the "Maison Centrale" in the former Wehrmacht prison (until 1954/55), and in the following years it was used as emergency accommodation for people seeking accommodation. With the establishment of the Germersheim garrison (1956), the complex became the property of the federal government and was used as a locksmith´s shop, carpentry workshop and warehouse in the following years. After extensive renovation, the former detention centre was put into service in May 1999 with office and club rooms.
