The writer Joseph Victor von Scheffel gave the Bergsee its current name, replacing the earlier name “Schwarzsee”, which had been used for the five-hectare dammed lake. In his honor, a distinctive rock formation was named Scheffelfelsen – a place where the wild and romantic atmosphere of the surroundings can be felt especially vividly. Even today, one can sense how this setting inspired the author’s story centuries ago.
Visitors to the Bergsee will now find a cozy restaurant, pedal boats, and a nearby wildlife enclosure.
