In 1978, under its then mayor Dr. Herbert König, the city of Goeppingen proposed establishing a state museum for the history of technology in Goeppingen and offered to sponsor the museum itself. A support association was founded for this purpose, in which all the major companies in the region were represented. Unfortunately, the contract for a technology museum went to Mannheim (Technoseum).
Nevertheless, the idea of creating a local technology museum was retained. This support association gave rise to what is now the Göppinger Technikforum e.V. (Goeppingen Technology Forum). One of the association´s goals is to establish a local exhibition depot in the city of Goeppingen. The basis for this is an extensive collection of machines, consisting largely of lathes from the Boehringer company. Among other things, an ensemble of individual machines impressively demonstrates how machines used to be driven by transmission belts.
This collection is located in the old Boehringer garages on Hermannstrasse in Goeppingen. What makes this machine park so special is that the majority of the machines are in working order and can be experienced firsthand. The “Garagenschrauber" (garage mechanics), a group of former Boehringer employees, ensure that this remains the case. Not only do they keep the machines in good working order, but they also have many interesting and amusing stories to tell.
At present, visits are only possible during the garage mechanics´ meetings. Guided tours of the collection can also be arranged by prior arrangement.
