The widely visible landmark of Dettelbach, with its unequal towers, is the Parish Church of St. Augustine. Built on the foundations of the former knight’s castle of the Ritter von Thetilabach, it remains a highlight for culture enthusiasts today with its square tower, the smaller round tower, and the connecting bridge between them.
The oldest part of the church, the square tower, is still owned by the town, as it once housed the watchman, a municipal employee responsible for watching out for fires and approaching attackers.
The eastern choir, a Gothic chancel, was built around 1500, followed by the small round tower serving as a stair turret, and the complex was completed with the western choir, already in Baroque style.
In the 1960s, the church underwent an eastward orientation, which remains to this day. The last comprehensive interior and exterior renovation took place between 2009 and 2011.
A notable attraction is the winged altar by the Leipzig painter Michael Triegel, dedicated to the theme of “Augustine.” Dettelbach is the only parish church in the Diocese of Würzburg with St. Augustine as its patron.
