[1] Genoveva castle

Description

The Genoveva castle is one of the landmarks of the city of Mayen and stands prominently on a rocky hill above the market square. The late Gothic castle has been besieged, destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its turbulent history. The current complex consists of the upper castle with the 34 m high Goloturm and the slightly lower outer castle. Towards the city, the castle is protected by a large castle gate, and on the other side by the keep and a bailey. The former castle moat is now a ring road, spanned by a 20 m long Gothic stone bridge. The castle houses two exhibitions of the Eifelmuseum - EifelTotal and the German Slate Mine.
