Description

The Collegiate Church of Sophienstift is part of a historical ensemble and is quietly and picturesquely located on the Elde. The small, square church building was predominantly built in half-timbered construction in 1858; a remnant of the east gable still recalls the original construction from 1633.

With its simple architecture, the fieldstone wall with decorative gable, and the small belfry with bell, the church exudes a special tranquility. Inside, visitors encounter two oil paintings of Martin Luther and the foundress Duchess Sophie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, bringing the history of the place alive.

After a comprehensive restoration, the church was rededicated in 2006. Today it is used for devotions, concerts, and cultural events – a quiet, noteworthy place for a short break by the water.
