Description

The Archimedean Screw in Lübz is an interactive water game located right at the Gerberbach. Visitors can turn the screw themselves and witness how water is lifted upwards with the help of the spiral screw – an exciting experience for both children and adults alike. The Archimedean Screw operates on a simple yet ingenious principle: Inside a tilted tube, there is a spiral coil. When the screw is turned, water is trapped in the spaces between the spirals and transported upwards. Historically, this principle is considered one of the oldest known methods of lifting water from lower to higher levels. As early as ancient Greece, Archimedes used this technique for irrigation and drainage – an invention that is still used in modern pumps and hydropower plants today.
