Between Hamburg and Schwerin, in southwest Mecklenburg on the small river Motel, lies the small town of Wittenburg. Its historical traces reach back to the times of the Slavic princes; since 1226, Wittenburg has held town rights, making it one of the oldest towns in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The historic rampart planted with linden trees around the old town shows until today that Wittenburg was once fiercely contested and, in the Middle Ages, flourished as a fortified bastion and a conveniently located trading center.
Various structures such as the historic town hall, the Amtsberg Tower, the railway station, and the Dutch windmill are today testimonies to the rise of the Mecklenburg small town in the 19th century.

With its location directly on the A24 between Hamburg and Berlin, Wittenburg is still conveniently situated today and is best known for its Alpincenter Hamburg-Wittenburg. The snow park brings the atmosphere of the mountains to the North German plain and, with its slopes for almost every difficulty level, is a magnet for winter fans and skiers.

Those who instead travel to the nearby municipality of Wittendörp immediately feel the soothing expanse that characterizes Mecklenburg-Schwerin. A special attraction is Lake Woez. As part of the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve, it offers a valuable habitat for wild birds and numerous aquatic animals—and is therefore also an ideal observation spot for nature lovers and photographers.
