Experience History, Stories, and Adventures – in the Festival and Energy City of Wunsiedel

The city of Wunsiedel in the Fichtel Mountains invites visitors on a journey through time and nature. Winding alleyways and lovingly preserved houses still tell the story of its medieval origins. The Spitalhof, now home to the Fichtelgebirge Museum, vividly brings this past to life. The great fire of 1834 changed the city profoundly—destroying many buildings yet giving rise to the elegant Classicist architecture that now shapes the newly built market square.

Nature lovers will find plenty to explore on Katharinenberg. In the nearby Birds of Prey Park, majestic raptors can be experienced up close during flight demonstrations. The “Lernort Natur-Kultur Fichtelgebirge” environmental education center invites visitors of all ages to take part in hands-on activities at its interactive pavilion.

A true adventure awaits on the Luisenburg. It is home to Europe’s largest rock labyrinth—a stunning sea of granite, navigated through narrow crevices, low passages, and winding trails. The site was shaped around 1805 in honor of Queen Louise of Prussia’s visit, and even she was captivated by the novel experience of bowing to nature and crawling beneath massive stones.

Nestled within this unique landscape are the renowned Luisenburg Festival Plays, considered by many to be Germany’s oldest and most beautiful open-air theatre performances. From June to September, visitors can enjoy a rich program of guest productions, concerts, and several in-house shows.
