Description

Already in 1910, the Schwerin building director Hamann suggested the erection of an observation tower in the Teterow Heidbergen. The excellent location and the ice age shaped landscape probably inspired him to this idea. It wasn´t until 1922 that this proposal was taken up. Instead of an observation tower, a monument for the Teterow fallen of the First World War was to be built. The inflation made the financing of the project a challenge. The architect Paul Korff, with his design of a sword rammed into the earth, was awarded the contract to build the memorial. After a construction period of only 104 days, the memorial was inaugurated on 25th September 1927. Today, it stands as a reminder of the victims of both World Wars, as well as the sufferers of arbitrary acts and violence.
