[14] St. Lucia-Pumpe an der Küfergasse

Description

During the renovation of Gelderner Street in 1985, an old well was uncovered under the road surface. The neighbourhood subsequently decided to honour the well with a pump. The sculptor von Levetzow was commissioned to create a statue of Saint Lucia, the patron saint of the nearby Gelderner Gate. During the persecution of the church under Diocletian, it is said that the martyr, who was accused by her own fiancé, was stabbed in the throat with a sword. She only died after a priest had given her the communion wafer. The name "Küfergasse" is a reminder of the cooperage trade that was located here for over 200 years.
