Description
Burg Borken is situated as a former hilltop castle on a castle mound south of the old town of Borken in the Schwalm-Eder district of Hesse; the site lies at about 229 m above sea level (NHN) between the lower and upper Bergstraße.
The site was first mentioned in 1269 as the possession of the Herren von Borken; at the same time it was apparently a fief of the Counts of Ziegenhain. The Herren von Borken died out in the male line in 1285. From 1297 various feudal lords succeeded to rule the castle.
The site was destroyed in 1469 during the Hessian Brother War; a final mention in the sources dates to 1543.
Today the formerly polygonal castle complex is only discernible as a Burgstall. Only slight remains of the defensive system—rampart and ditch—have survived, indicating the course of the historic layout.
