Description

In the Duisburg district of Rumeln-Kaldenhausen, the Bienenmuseum of the Kreisimkerverbandes Duisburg e. V. presents the cultural history and scientific aspects of beekeeping. The museum is housed in a pavilion on the grounds of the Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium and occupies an exhibition space of about 400 m².

The institution traces its origins to a museum founded in 1959 in Duisburg-Wedau, which was located at the "Am See" school until 1996. Due to growth in the collection and visitor numbers, the museum moved in 1997 to premises on Kirchfeldstraße before relocating to its current site in 2013. Volunteer commitment continues to sustain its operations; in 2023/2024 a comprehensive renovation and redesign of the presentation was carried out.

The museum is devoted to the honeybee as a domestic animal as well as to the history, technology and research of beekeeping. On display are tools, equipment and a large historical collection of hives—from hollowed tree trunks and straw skeps to modern movable-frame hives—including reconstructed rarities. A glass observation hive makes life within the bee colony and the queen’s egg-laying directly observable. The focus also includes bee products, behavioural research, the Varroa mite and the causes of bee mortality.

As a training and further education operation of the Deutschen Imkereiverbandes, the museum also serves as a teaching and meeting place for prospective beekeepers; seminar rooms provide space for practical exercises and special exhibitions. Outside, an insect-friendly garden with a bee educational trail, a teaching apiary and a variety of wild bee nesting sites complements the environmental education. Research projects and experimental hives in the courtyard point to collaborations with universities and research institutes.
