Description

In the heart of Munich’s Old Town, the Beer and Oktoberfest Museum informs visitors about the cultural and historical significance of beer and the Munich Oktoberfest. The Edith-Haberland-Wagner Foundation is the museum’s sponsoring body and also holds a majority stake in the Augustiner Brewery.

The museum is housed in a listed historic Old Munich townhouse at Sterneckerstraße 2, in the triangle between Isartor, the Viktualienmarkt and Marienplatz. The exhibition spaces extend over several upper floors; the rooms above are used for the museum administration. The ground floor and the first floor house a tavern, the Museumsstüberl.

The museum opened on 7 September 2005.

The permanent presentation is divided into two thematic areas. On the second floor the Beer Museum is devoted to the history of beer and the art of brewing and displays exhibits on beer culture. On the third floor the Oktoberfest Museum documents the development of the Munich Oktoberfest. The fourth floor serves as a space for rotating special exhibitions and complements the permanent exhibition with thematic in-depth presentations.
