Description
In Gelsenkirchen the documentation centre "Gelsenkirchen im Nationalsozialismus" is devoted to the research and communication of the city's history during the National Socialist era. The institution is operated by the Institute for Urban History of the City of Gelsenkirchen.
The Documentation Centre is located in Gelsenkirchen‑Erle at Cranger Straße 323. It is housed in a former police building erected in 1907, whose historic fabric gives the interior its characteristic atmosphere.
The institution opened on 8 May 1994; a revised version of the permanent exhibition has been on display since 8 May 2015. The presentation addresses everyday life in Gelsenkirchen between 1933 and 1945, adopting a local perspective on National Socialist rule.
The offerings include a permanent exhibition, an on‑site reference library and the provision of seminars. The exhibition is aimed, among others, at school classes from grade 7 upwards and is conceived as a learning site for engaging with history and society.
