Description
In the historic town centre of Oedt, the Heimatmuseum Oedt serves as a collection of local history and as an educational site for the past of the former municipality.
The museum is run by the Heimatverein Oedt; since 1989 the exhibitions have been displayed in the cellar rooms of the former town hall. In addition, the association maintains a permanent exhibition in Burg Uda.
The exhibition rooms are arranged thematically. One room presents the former municipal administration and social institutions; village models of Oedt, the Honschaft Hagen and Heimers Hof show the settlement pattern according to the cadastre of 1825. Another room is dedicated to military and war service as well as to the victims of the wars of 1870/71, 1914–1918 and 1939–1945.
Other sections cover the prehistoric and early historic development of the region from the Stone Age to the Frankish period, as well as the Middle Ages, with numerous finds from the 1961 excavation on display. A separate room documents aspects of the local Mooren family, club life in Oedt and the important textile industry, including the firms P. Mertes Söhne and Girmeswerke AG. Finally, one room presents the architectural and ecclesiastical development of the Church of St. Vitus.
The Heimatmuseum Oedt links regional everyday history with economic and church development, thereby providing a compact overview of the development of the former municipality.
