ZILLE MUSEUM

Description

The ZiLLEMUSEUM was founded to provide the city, its citizens and visitors from around the world with a permanent place of remembrance and commemoration of its great son and 80th honorary citizen, Heinrich Zille, and his work.

The museum seeks to keep alive the memory of the artist who was for a long time Berlin’s most popular and to inform about his life and activities. It honors Heinrich Zille’s importance as a committed chronicler of the metropolis and its social problems as well as his artistic achievements as a draftsman, graphic artist and photographer.

The ZiLLEMUSEUM, with its currently more than 150 exhibits, presents visitors with a significant part of Berlin’s and Germany’s art and cultural history.

In our permanent exhibition “Heinrich Zille is Waiting for You”, the photo exhibition “Zille Time Travel” and in our cabinet “Erotica by the Master” we display drawings and books related to the cycle “Hurengespräche” (literally “Whores’ Conversations”), which Zille wrote under the pseudonym W. Pfeifer and which was immediately banned by the Prussian censors when it appeared in 1921.

In our cinema room you can comfortably watch excerpts from the film “Det war Zille sein Milljöh” by Irmgard von zur Mühlen. The film begins with a self-portrait of Zille and shows unique footage of the artist and of Berlin.
