Description
In Fürth city centre at Königsplatz, Kunst Galerie Fürth (stylized as kunst galerie fürth) presents itself as a municipal exhibition venue for contemporary art.
The project was initiated by municipal cultural stakeholders together with a local artists’ collective and the cultural office. In autumn 2002 the gallery opened its doors in the former Sparkasse building; the opening exhibition was titled "WährungsTausch". With this opening, the city of Fürth became the last major German city to have a municipal art gallery.
Since then, Kunst Galerie Fürth has presented six to eight exhibitions annually, predominantly contemporary positions from the metropolitan region and other federal states. The programme is supplemented by thematically oriented presentations and art-historical exhibitions. The institution was led by a single person for eighteen years; in 2020 responsibility was transferred to an art historian. Supervisory authority is exercised by Department IV – Social Affairs, Youth and Culture of the City of Fürth.
