Kunstmuseum Ahrenshoop

On the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, the Kunstmuseum Ahrenshoop plays a central role in commemorating the artists’ colony that developed there; the museum is supported by the Stiftung Kunstmuseum Ahrenshoop and opened on 30 August 2013.

The museum is located in Ahrenshoop on the Baltic Sea coast and is a privately run institution that emerged from civic engagement by the foundation and a circle of friends. Its educational work focuses on political, social and artistic developments since the late 19th century and links local tradition with wider German contexts.

The museum’s creation goes back to an initiative from 2005; already in 2008 an Infobox was put into operation as a documentation centre. The new building was supported with state funds and funding from the European Regional Development Fund. The legal sponsor is the foundation under civil law "Stiftung Kunstmuseum Ahrenshoop"; operations are financed through the foundation’s own funds, grants, donations and the support of a friends’ association. Since September 2024 the executive management has been in the hands of a long-standing female member of the museum’s staff.

Architecturally, the museum combines regional building traditions with contemporary exhibition architecture: five cubes that appear from the outside as individual houses merge inside into a cohesive building complex and provide flexible exhibition spaces. Particularly striking are the light-filled rooms with skylight systems and prisms, which allow for an even, almost shadow-free illumination.

The collection comprises more than 800 paintings, prints and sculptures by artists who worked in Ahrenshoop or the nearby coastal region. Holdings from the founding generation of the artists’ colony meet works of classical modernism, positions from the 1920s–1940s, art from the GDR and contemporary works. Important names in the collection include Elisabeth von Eicken, Paul Müller-Kaempff, Anna Gerresheim, Cesar Klein, Alfred Partikel, Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Karl Hofer, Edmund Kesting and Wolfgang Mattheuer. The collection is supplemented through acquisitions, donations and loans; a specialist library and a growing archive are also open to external researchers.

Alongside the permanent exhibition, the museum presents a changing programme of exhibitions and organises guided tours, educational projects, readings and concerts. Publications in the form of exhibition and collection catalogues document the museum’s curatorial work.
