Description
In Mainz, the Leibniz‑Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA) is present as a nationally anchored research institute for archaeology. It is supported by the federal government and the states and belongs to the Leibniz‑Gemeinschaft deutscher Forschungseinrichtungen; internationally it is active in archaeological research.
The current designation was introduced on 1 January 2023, after the institution had previously operated as the Römisch‑Germanisches Zentralmuseum (RGZM), whose origins date back to 1852. A further organisational expansion took place on 1 January 2024: the Zentrum für Baltische und Skandinavische Archäologie, based in Schleswig, was integrated into LEIZA.
Thus the historical continuity of the former RGZM and the more recent structural changes combine to form a research institution for archaeology with a cross‑regional remit.
