Experience industrial heritage in Witten

Situated at the entrance to the idyllic Muttental valley in Witten,  the Zeche Nachtigall Colliery is where mining in the Ruhr region began more than 300 years ago. Initially, horizontal tunnels were cut into the mountain to reach the “black gold,” followed by vertical shafts. Deep in the corridors of our visitor’s mine, you can experience the characteristic atmosphere of this bygone work environment. A quarry and brickworks were later established on the grounds. In our exhibitions, experience the world of raw materials and the region’s pioneering mining era.
