In Uffenheim in Middle Franconia, the Museum für Zivil und Wehrtechnik occupies the intersection between technology and military history and is aimed at visitors interested in technological development and contemporary history.
The origin of the collection goes back to the founding of the Verein für Zivil- und Wehrtechnik in 2005 in Bad Windsheim. After a decision by Uffenheim’s city council in the summer of 2006, the museum was established on the site of a former furniture factory and has been located there ever since.
The exhibition covers approximately 5,700 square metres and displays a range of military and civilian vehicles as well as numerous pieces of equipment. Particular emphasis is placed on military wheeled and tracked vehicles and on civilian vehicles; many of the vehicles are operational and are demonstrated in action during the annual museum festival on the outdoor grounds. The vehicles are complemented by uniforms, medals, contemporary documents, and weapons and artillery pieces from various decades and armed forces of different nations.
A dedicated section is devoted to the history of communications technology, linking military telecommunications equipment with civilian telephones and computers.
Overall, the museum presents technological developments in both civilian and military fields and preserves objects from different eras and various countries of origin.
