Description

The world’s largest collection of Islamic bronzes (7th–13th centuries) is housed in a historic townhouse in the heart of Bamberg’s Old Town. In addition to metalwork, the museum also features a significant collection of ceramics and glass. The objects originate primarily from the Iranian region (present-day Iran, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan) and offer a fascinating glimpse into life along the Silk Road. Writing implements, medical and cosmetic utensils, as well as everyday objects such as oil lamps, incense burners, cauldrons, and jugs—right down to amulets and jewelry—demonstrate how a household of that era was furnished. Decorations featuring plant motifs and abstract patterns, as well as depictions of nature and animals, demonstrate the high standard of craftsmanship. They are executed using masterful metallurgical production and decorative techniques such as repoussé, stamping, chasing, inlay, and openwork.
