Description

The market fountain, designed by Bonifatius Stirnberg from Aachen, was constructed using Namur blue stones found during the construction of the marketplace, relics of the old market fountain from the 14th century. The water-spouting elements are bronze-cast rose tendrils and flower bouquets. The movable figures reflect the history and social life of Straelen:

• Bishop - Anno II of Cologne, lord of the manor 1064
• Shooting officer - vibrant fraternity life since the Middle Ages
• Flower girl - Straelen's tradition as a city of flowers
• Clown - tradition maintenance of the active carnival club since 1334

The figures of the glockenspiel indicate that in the past, all kinds of business were conducted and sealed with a handshake at the marketplace as a trading center. This was also true in the case of the pig market that existed until the beginning of the 1970s.
