Description

Dornstetten Local History Museum

Located in the heart of the medieval cityscape, characterised by half-timbered houses, visitors will find the local history museum housed in the former tithe barn and in the former granary. Across three floors, exhibits provide insights into the city history of the once nations main administrative office in Dornstetten, as well as the working day and life of the inhabitants in former times.

The tour of the local history museum begins on the ground floor of the tithe barn with a 19th-century brewery. On the first floor, the exhibition continues into the granary. Various themes are displayed in the originally restored rooms: Early history of Dornstetten, city development and administration of the nations administrative city, church and religion, school, living, and daily life and work around the turn of the century 1900.

The second floor houses historic and partially extinct crafts and exhibits showcasing the workday of earlier times. Water supply, forestry and agriculture, and lumber floating are further themes presented.

A separate section is devoted to the geological and paleontological collection. In the attic of the museum, visitors will find the city´s art collection, based on a donation from the artist Eleonore Kötter, who passed away in 2017 and lived in Dornstetten. This "Graphic Cabinet" showcases not only the permanent exhibition but also theme-related changing exhibitions.

An extraordinary feature is the parapet walk on the first floor. This walkway (an observation and defense post) is continuously preserved along the north and east sides of the buildings for about 60 meters.
