Description

The Rostock Gate was constructed as part of a double gate system in the middle of the 14th century. It was part of the city fortification. Outside the walls, there was a rampart. On the exterior side of the gate, visible grooves could suggest the existence of a possible drop gate. The wooden infill on the city side of the gate tower originates from the 19th century and encloses an area initially left open for material savings. The outer gate was demolished in the 17th century. At this time, the city fortification had already lost its significance. In the area of the old city wall – along the current ring roads – cottages emerged as quarters for less affluent residents.
