Description
The Museum with a Clear View - not only for Glasses Wearers!
In Rathenow, the "City of Optics," visitors learn that optics is much more than just polished glass. The journey through time leads through ten thematic complexes, from the founders and industrial pioneers to significant scientists and developments.
History is not left out either: Who would have known that our current term "glasses" originates from a semi-precious stone that magnifies things optically when looked through, the beryl.
Over 200 years ago, Johann Heinrich August Duncker designed and constructed the multi-grinding machine here in Rathenow and received the "royal" privilege to establish an optical industry institute. With Duncker´s invention, eleven lenses could be ground simultaneously and in good quality. This laid the foundation for the optical industry in Rathenow, which still provides jobs today.
By bringing together historically valuable, partly unique exhibits, visitors are shown optics as the soul of many devices, the application of these devices, and the importance of sight and light in various ways. From the small lens in the microscope to the giant lighthouse lens, visitors will find everything in the Optics Industry Museum. The museum displays over 1000 optical instruments. The majority of the exhibits are from the museum´s collection, complemented by loans from the Association for the Promotion, Care, and Preservation of Optical Traditions in Rathenow e.V., as well as from other museums, institutions, and private individuals from Germany and abroad.
Visitors have the opportunity to use historical and innovative products themselves and to test some optical phenomena through special experiments.
Thematic special exhibitions, action days, popular science lectures, museum-educational offerings for kindergartens and school classes, as well as expert-led tours, complement the museum visit.
The museum possesses an extensive specialized library and collection on the optical industry and regional history, which can be made available for viewing to the interested public.
