The non-profit foundation Wasserkunst Elbinsel Kaltehofe operates two exhibition houses in Hamburg Rothenburgsort: the Wasserkunst on the Elbe Island Kaltehofe and the WaterForum.
It is not far from the Hamburg city center to the green pearl in the Norderelbe, the WASSERKUNST on Kaltehofe in the Rothenburgsort district. From here, Hamburg was supplied with clean and germ-free drinking water for almost 100 years from 1893. Since 2011, the industrial monument and nature park invite visitors to experience a piece of modern urban history as well as the diverse nature of the Elbe Island. The exhibition on Kaltehofe focuses on the history of Hamburg´s water supply and the former Kaltehofe waterworks, and on the city´s ornamental fountains. Along the former filtering basins, a nature experience path leads through the landscape park of the Wasserkunst. The free-to-access path consists of various elements, providing a comprehensive sensory experience. Kaltehofe offers an extensive guided tour program and can be booked as a conference venue. An on-site café caters to visitors´ refreshments.
The WASSERFORUM is located in the former pump house of Hamburg´s oldest waterworks, the Stadtwasserkunst Rothenburgsort from 1848 – the first centralized water supply in continental Europe. The exhibition on water supply and wastewater disposal can be visited as part of booked group tours and explores water-related topics in Hamburg from all aspects across three floors: the historical water supply, the extraction and treatment of groundwater, and wastewater purification. Many original exhibits, models, and plant components make a visit particularly interesting. A large number of interactive stations invite visitors to get actively involved.
