[6] St. Sebastian’s Chapel

Description

St. Sebastian’s Chapel district is an important example of Late Gothic architecture from the 15th century. It was built in 1475 as a cemetery chapel after the graveyard at the parish church of St. Urban and Vitus had become too small. Its dedication to Saint Sebastian reflects his significance at the time as a patron saint invoked for protection against epidemics.

The building is designed as a simple hall structure with a recessed chancel and a sacristy. Despite its function as a chapel, it is of considerable size for the region. The interior has been largely preserved in its original state and is characterized by three Late Gothic altars. Of particular note are the high altar dating from the time of construction and the two side altars with figurative representations.

Today, St. Sebastian’s Chapel is a listed cultural monument and a focal point of public interest and forms an integral part of the cultural life of the municipality of Neuhausen.
