Description

The Akademisches Kunstmuseum Bonn, the university’s collection of antiquities, is one of the city’s oldest museums. Since its founding in 1818 it has had the task of collecting Greek and Roman art from the Mediterranean area in casts and originals. Because of the scope and variety of its holdings and the size of its exhibition space, it is one of the most important university museums for ancient art and culture.

The museum owns one of the largest cast collections in Germany, with around 2,700 plaster casts of statues, reliefs and small-scale works. The original collection contains many thousands of ancient objects made of clay, stone, metal, glass and organic materials, offering diverse insights into the world of antiquity. The total holdings comprise approximately 30,000 objects. In addition to its regular museum operations with set opening hours, the museum hosts University courses, guided tours, drawing classes, special exhibitions and research projects.

Because the historic building at the Hofgarten is currently undergoing a comprehensive renovation, the museum has temporarily moved to alternative premises at Römerstraße 164. There the original collection is presented to its customary extent, while the cast collection is shown as a small, representative selection.
