Description

The Fort de la Bastille in Grenoble is a 19th-century military fortification built on the site of medieval defenses. Construction began in 1823 and was completed in 1847, following designs by the French military engineer General Haxo. The decision to erect the fort aimed at protecting Grenoble against potential assaults through the surrounding valleys. Situated on a steep rocky plateau above the city, the structure reaches an elevation of approximately 264 meters above urban ground level. Architecturally, the fortress features a polygonal layout accessible via a dry moat. The outer walls are composed of robust ashlar stone and brickwork designed to withstand the artillery fire of the time. Originally, the rampart included seven gun towers, providing overlapping fields of fire. In 1874, under the Séré de Rivières fortification program, additional blockhouses and defensive earthworks were added in response to advances in artillery technology during the late 19th century. Following its decommissioning as an active military site in the early 20th century, the fort underwent several adaptive reuses. Since the 1980s, it has been managed by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional authority and houses, among other installations, the Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation de l’Isère. The summit plateau contains exhibition halls, an auditorium for educational programs and conference uses, and spaces for rotating displays presenting archival materials on regional wartime history. Access to the fort is provided by a heritage-designated aerial tramway known locally as “Les Bulles,” inaugurated in 1934. The two climate-controlled cabins ascend approximately 260 meters, offering uninterrupted operation throughout the year. In addition, a network of marked hiking trails of varying difficulty connects the site to Grenoble’s urban paths. The Fort de la Bastille is recognized today as an important cultural monument under active preservation.
