Description

Following the establishment of the LUMA Foundation in 2004, dedicated to promoting contemporary artistic creation, Maja Hoffmann launched the LUMA Arles project in the Parc des Ateliers in 2013. This creative campus offers new perspectives for artists in their creations, their collaborations, and the public presentation of their works. The Parc des Ateliers is a former 11-hectare railway wasteland. Here, the tower designed by Frank Gehry and seven former factories from the industrial culture of the 19th century exist in perfect harmony. The Parc des Ateliers is a former railway wasteland spanning 27 hectares. Here, the tower designed by Frank Gehry and seven former factories from the 19th-century industrial heritage coexist in perfect harmony. LUMA Arles is located in the Parc des Ateliers, a site initially used by the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) company, which became the SNCF in 1938. Implementing this creative campus in the Parc des Ateliers required a reorganization and redesign of the premises to achieve maximum flexibility for research and artistic production. The renovation of the industrial buildings in the Parc des Ateliers was commissioned to Selldorf architectural firm. "Les Forges", "La Cour des Forges", "La Mécanique Générale", "La Formation", and "Le Médico-Social" are now used for different purposes such as exhibitions, presentations, and artist residencies. La Grande Halle was renovated in 2007 at the instigation of the PACA region and has not been renovated since then. The tower designed by Frank Gehry completes these spaces, providing new perspectives for the venue's artistic program. The landscaped garden, the park, and the pond surrounding the campus are the work of the landscape architect Bas Smets. The 10-hectare park, designed as a journey through the region's fauna and flora, is a place of life, interaction, and leisure open to all. Visitors strolling around the park will discover art works, sculptures, and installations.
