Description

Located directly on the federal highway, the Lengefeld Lime Works is a unique highlight that catches the eye immediately. Unmatched in its size and preservation of its substance in all of Europe, it has been listed as an associated object in the UNESCO World Heritage Ore Mountain/Krušnohoří Mining Region since 2019.

The Lengefeld Lime Works is one of the most significant technical monuments of the old binders´ industry in Europe. The quarrying of limestone here can be traced back to the 16th century. The still existing technical facilities document the working conditions of the 19th century. The complete technological process from dolomite marble extraction to the production of stone powder, quicklime, and slaked lime can be comprehended through original facilities and models. Limestone mining in Lengefeld continued until 2015.

The four still-existing lime kilns were in operation until 1975. Today, an exhibition in Kiln IV, among other things, reports on the storage of Dresden art treasures at the end of World War II in the lime works, their transfer to the Soviet Union, and finally the return of the art to the GDR in the 1950s.

The old open-pit mine is part of today´s Fauna-Flora-Habitat. In the summer months of June and July, the quarry floor transforms into a blooming landscape. Thousands of wild-growing orchids then unfold their floral splendor.
