Description

The 48-hectare Park on the Ilm is a unique landscape garden on the edge of Weimar´s old town. Duke Carl August and Johann Wolfgang Goethe realized their garden artistic ideas here. They created a walkable work of art with varied landscape scenes, park architectures, and seating areas, which still serves as a place for recreation, education, and aesthetic enjoyment of nature today.

The creation of the Park on the Ilm is closely linked to Goethe´s life and work in Weimar. In 1776, Duke Carl August gifted the poet a house with a garden, known today as the Goethe Garden House located in the Park on the Ilm. Subsequently, Goethe and Carl August planned the first facilities in the new English style between the city, the castle, and Goethe´s garden house. Thus, from 1778, the design of the western slope of the Ilm was developed with its woodland backdrops, walking paths, and park architectures. The construction of the Roman House, completed in 1797, marked the peak of park development after the large-scale expansion southwards and the integration of older castle gardens. With its underground tunnel system, the Erlebnis Park Cave allows one to explore the park from a completely different perspective. The entrance to the twelve-meter-deep cave is located in the immediate vicinity of the Liszt House between the steep slope to the Ilm and the Belvedere Alley.
