Stadtmuseum Ludwigshafen

Description

The Stadtmuseum Ludwigshafen has maintained a historical collecting activity since 1904 and played a central role in municipal history education. From 1984 to 2021 it was housed on the first floor of the Ludwigshafen Rathaus-Center; since 2021 the museum has been closed because the Rathaus-Center is being demolished. The collections are currently in storage. A reopening was planned for 2023 at a new location in Ludwigshafen Süd, where the museum, together with the Stadtarchiv Ludwigshafen, was to form the Haus der Stadtgeschichte; this project has not yet been implemented.

The permanent exhibition traced the development of the young industrial city of Ludwigshafen on the Rhine, using exhibits, explanatory texts and media stations. The focus was on the periods from the early 17th century to the mid-19th century, supplemented by concise presentations of the individual districts. Other central themes included work and industry, the First and Second World Wars, the subsequent reconstruction and the early phase of the Wirtschaftswunder. In addition, the exhibition addressed aspects of "culture and diversity" such as club life, sport and leisure, public art, sons and daughters of the city of Ludwigshafen, migration history and religious diversity.

A striking object in the permanent exhibition was a wooden city model measuring three by four meters that depicts the city around 1909. In addition, the Stadtmuseum regularly presented temporary exhibitions on local and regional history as well as on urban issues.
