The foundation was established by Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt after the death of Wolfgang Mattheuer in 2006. Its aim and purpose are to preserve the artistic oeuvre of Wolfgang Mattheuer and Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt, to research and document it scholarly, and to make it accessible to the public. In addition, the foundation highlights Wolfgang Mattheuer’s role as an academic teacher and his influence on students and artistic successors. Alongside lending works for temporary exhibitions and as long-term loans to major public collections, the preparation and publication of scholarly works is another important focus of the foundation’s activities. The foundation’s holdings include numerous paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic works from the estate of Wolfgang Mattheuer. From Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt the entire artistic output, including her illustrated books, has been incorporated. Other important components are the written estate of both artists as well as their published works.
