The cement museum was opened in May 2010 and is located in the historic "Köttings-Mühle" watermill (first mentioned in a document in 1385) What does the museum show?
The cement museum vividly shows the development of the "Beckum cement district" from its beginnings to the industrial production of cement, which was the largest cement district in the world with 33 cement works and had a decisive influence on this region!
Documents, pictures and models are used to trace the historical development of the technology from the extraction of raw materials to cement production. In addition to a model of a complete cement works, there are also models of a rotary kiln and a cement grinding plant for the production of cement. Another highlight of the museum is a fully equipped cement laboratory with many historical laboratory devices through the ages, with which the cement quality and cement properties were examined.
Along with cement, mechanical engineering also became increasingly important in the local region. Above all, companies were founded with a focus on cement kiln construction and conveyor technology, from which companies developed that are represented worldwide with their products. Due to the great importance of the cement industry, mechanical engineering and craft businesses, up to 50 % of the people in this region worked in these industries! Much is also shown about these industries in the cement museum. The advertising slogan of the cement and concrete industry is: "...it's what we make of it that counts..."
