The slate town of Steinach became known worldwide as a supplier of styluses. About 30 billion of these slender writing tools, made from the local slate, were sent all over the world. Around the globe, generations of children once made their first attempts at writing with slate styluses from Steinach. Today, the German Slate Museum recalls the 400-year history of stylus production, everyday working life and the difficult social situation of the people. In addition to the exhibition on the history of the stylus industry, it also offers information on slate writing boards production, the roofing trade, the processing and artistic use of slate, German slate deposits, slate painting and the geology of the region. The classroom from 1940 invites you to sit down in the benches. Whether writing attempts as childhood memories of the older generation or a completely new writing feeling of the young guests - it is fun to try it out. Also of interest are an original reconstructed stylus-maker‘s hut, a homeworker‘s parlour furnished with period furniture and a 17 m² mine model railway layout. On the geological trail to the stylus slate quarries on the Fellberg, you can explore the old mining sites. Together with the Slate Writing Board Museum in Ludwigsstadt and the Thuringian Slate Park - Technical Monument - in Lehesten, the museum presents the core region of the „blue gold“ in the Slate Geopark
