Dillenburg’s defensive fortifications on the Schlossberg (‘castle hill’) are the largest of their kind in Germany. These fortifications, including the ramparts and battlements (casemates), were partially excavated in the 1960s and today give visitors an idea of the size of the complex that could have held more than 2,000 soldiers as they defended the castle in times of war. A guided tour of Dillenburg’s ‘subterranean world’ ends with the highlight of a visit to the well in the ‘Löwengrube’ (‘Lion’s Den’) and the ‘Rubensgefängnis’ prison cell.
