Warin Castle from the lake side
Drawn in situ in 1838
Beschreibung
Warin is missing from the list of Mecklenburg castles in the 12th century, but is mentioned as a village in 1178. As Bishop Brunward, who returned from exile in Lübeck in 1218, was documented here in the winter of 1229 and part of the castle still had Romanesque elements when it was demolished in 1838, he must have been the builder of the first building. Construction work on the castle is documented in 1284. The residential tower known as the bishop's tower is now built. Other buildings are added later. An 11 metre high wall, a double moat and ramparts make the castle fortified. The age of the 34 metre high castle tower with its roof, which was the central prison of the region for centuries and was demolished as early as 1833, is unclear. Today, a section of moat and a model at the market remind us of the former power of the Schwerin bishops. Panels on the Burgweg nature trail show views from ancient times.
