„Good hunting! Rutger von der Horst was certainly present at many a hunt. However, the aristocrats were not primarily interested in obtaining a regular roast venison or stag for the local table - for them such joint outings were primarily social events. Here the man of nobility showcased his possessions: magnificent horses, noble hunting clothes and ornately decorated weapons. Even the ladies of the nobility were allowed to take part in special hunts, in which they used trained birds of prey - because there was no shooting. Hunting was a privilege of the better society, but largely forbidden to all non-aristocrats. The farmers were only allowed to hunt hares or birds with traps - or poach them illegally. But they were not to be caught doing so..."
