Station: [1] Introduction
The ‘Parkhaus-Museum’ on the Stadtgraben shows an exhibition on everyday life in Sumelocenna, the Roman Rottenburg. The exhibition presents original excavations of part of the ancient city, a documentary film and changing exhibitions on special themes. For children, young people and families, special formats are offered to convey provincial Roman history, such as guided tours for school classes of all ages, workshops, public children's tours and interactive city rallies.
The Sumelocenna Roman City Museum is built on an original Roman city section and provides a unique insight into the ancient settlement of supra-regional importance. The most impressive feature is a 32 metre long, luxuriously equipped latrine. A visit to the Sumelocenna Museum is really worthwhile for anyone who wants to find out more about hygiene and the great engineering achievements of Roman times.
The exhibition also features a wealth of original Roman artefacts, a peristyle villa, reconstructions, models and graphics. You can also visit a preserved Roman bath. A diorama with hundreds of pewter figures tells many stories from Roman Sumelocenna, especially for younger visitors. A film, also in French and English, provides an exciting introduction to the Roman era in south-west Germany. The Sumelocenna Roman Town Museum is part of the Neckar - Alb - Aare Roman Route.
The Roman Museum Sumelocenna is dedicated to its patron, Rottenburg's honorary citizen Professor Josef Eberle, alias Sebastian Blau, long-time editor of the Stuttgarter Zeitung. The ‘Sebastian Blau Hiking Trail’ commemorates the gifted Swabian dialect poet.
