Station: [8] Bats
Let us now get to a special feature of the mine! The animals that live in tree hollows, old houses and walls, and even tunnels.
Bats!
But you don't need to be afraid of bats. They don't attack people and mainly feed off insects.
To detect these insects and obstacles, bats use a special echolocation system. To do this, they emit 5 to 20 echolocation calls per second, which are inaudible to humans.
Of course, almost all species of bats can be found here in the tunnel system of the Steinkaulenberg. However, they are rarely seen because they are nocturnal and can fly so fast that the human eye has difficulty detecting them. There are no bats here in the visitor tunnel due to the high number of visitors.
We would therefore like to show you the bats on film. Please don't be alarmed when the lights are switched off.
