Historically developed with a historic old town center worth preserving—shaped by the higher-lying part with cathedral and castle—the center of the town of Wurzen has great visual appeal. Numerous cultural-historical witnesses of the past have been preserved to this day thanks to extensive restoration measures. The widely visible silhouette of the Ringelnatz town is characterized by the towers of the cathedral, one of the oldest and most interesting sacred buildings in Saxony, the bishop’s castle, the late-Gothic town church of St. Wenceslai, and the modern-era, imposing towers of the former Krietschmühle. Everywhere, visitors encounter Renaissance and Baroque buildings which, alongside newer residential and commercial buildings with richly ornamented Art Nouveau façades, create a very distinctive flair.
Wurzen’s most famous son is the artist Joachim Ringelnatz. Born on 07 August 1883 as Hans Gustav Bötticher at Crostigall 14, Ringelnatz became known above all for his humorous poems about the sailor “Kuttel Daddeldu”. On his 100th birthday, the Ringelnatz fountain was erected on the market square. A Ringelnatz trail leads visitors along important sights through the old town in Ringelnatz’s footsteps. A historical tour accompanies you to the historic buildings with their explanations. The works and life of the writer, painter, and cabaret artist still have an enormous influence on the cultural and social life of our town today. The museum, with Germany’s most important permanent Ringelnatz exhibition on his life and work, can be found in the most beautiful Renaissance building, Domgasse 2.
In our town, visitors find peace and tranquility far from the hustle and bustle of the big city and can enjoy it in the historic center or in the lovingly designed parklands on the outskirts of town. There is plenty of space and opportunity for shopping, lingering, resting, or simply strolling. There is so much that makes the 1,050-year-old town impressive and lovable. Let its beauty impress you!
