Our Landmarks

Salzbergen is a municipality in the southern Emsland (Lower Saxony) with around 8,400 inhabitants and is located on the border with North Rhine-Westphalia. The municipality is an industrial hub and is known for its role in petroleum processing. Salzbergen offers a wide range of attractive leisure and tourism opportunities. 

Interesting facts and activities

  • Oldest refinery in the world: Salzbergen is home to the oldest still-active oil refinery in the world, which has been in operation since the 19th century.
  • Nature and recreation: The surrounding area offers numerous cycling and hiking trails through idyllic landscapes with fields, meadows, and riverside scenery along the Ems. There are also bridle paths and opportunities for canoe tours on the Ems.
  • Sights: Local attractions include, among others, the old brine pumping house, St. Cyriakus Church, and the group of half-timbered houses on Kolpingstraße.
