[5] Stengel barracks

Description

The Stengel Barracks, named after Major General Karl Freiherr von Stengel, is a strong, fully casemated defensive building with a length of 220 metres. There are 270 gun and rifle embrasures on the front and flank sides, from which the final defence would have been made in the event of a siege and attack.
The barracks were located behind the main rampart at the point where the Karl front met the Becker front. The "Queichreduit" is located in the angle formed by the two fronts. This somewhat rounded two-storey blockhouse had the task of covering the inlet of the Queich, which runs underground from about the centre of the forecourt to behind the Stengel barracks, into the fortress. This small building alone has 6 gun and 33 rifle embrasures.
