Description

In the Upper Bavarian market town of Waging am See is the Bajuwarenmuseum Waging am See, an archaeological museum dedicated to the early medieval settlement of this cultural landscape. It situates its collections in the area between the Waginger See and the Mattsee, a region once shaped by the Salzachgletscher.

The foundation of the collection consists of finds that came to light around Waging in the 1980s. From these materials the museum's first incarnation opened in 1997; after a subsequent closure the objects were transferred to the Archäologische Staatssammlung München for sorting and cataloguing. Because of the anticipated costs a reopening was at times in doubt, until the municipal council decided on a new conception. The new exhibition was developed in cooperation with a school project and reopened in spring 2018.

The museum explores Germanic settlement following the Roman withdrawal and the processes by which the Bajuwaren emerged as an interaction of Germanic and Romance population groups. On display are significant archaeological finds from the Bajuwaren row-grave fields at Waging and Petting.
