Penzberg Mining Museum A journey back to past mining days. Coal mining in the Bavarian uplands around Penzberg dates back to the 16th century. In the town itself, coal extraction began around 1786. Today the mining museum commemorates the more than 250 years of mining, which came to an end with the cessation of coal production in 1966. Photographs, original objects from the mine such as pit lamps and miners' tools, models and audiovisual stations — specially designed for the museum, which was re-opened in 2013 after a one-year renovation — illustrate working life in the former mining town. In addition there are fossil and mineral collections. Core exhibits of the museum are the walk-in tunnel installations that convey a realistic impression of underground operations. The preservation of the miners' traditions is illustrated by flags, certificates and miners in their traditional costume. A rarity is the mine cinema, where a 1928 film showing all the working procedures in the pit is screened. Group tours by prior arrangement; special openings on request.
