Description

Situated in the hamlet of Brandstätt, the Chiemgau School Museum in Tacherting (Traunstein district) makes the material history of everyday school life visible. The privately run museum displays a selection of teaching implements from the 19th and 20th centuries, offering insights into the teaching and learning materials of bygone times.

The exhibition focuses on common school utensils such as slates, slate pencils and counting machines. Visitors thus learn which tools shaped lessons at the time and how classroom practice was organised.

A particular concern of the museum is active education for children: they are allowed to write on old slates with slate pencils, knit blackboard cloths, try out German script, handle a counting machine and sharpen slate pencils. Through hands-on experience, the everyday school world of the 19th and 20th centuries becomes vivid and tangible.
