G2 Kunsthalle

Description

Located in the heart of Leipzig, G2 Kunsthalle is a private museum for contemporary art, presenting permanent and temporary exhibitions drawn from its own collection and international loans.

The building is located at Dittrichring 13 in the inner city. It was erected in 1986 for the VEB Datenverarbeitungszentrum der Stadt Leipzig; after reunification it stood empty for a time and was later acquired, renovated, and partially converted into the Kunsthalle over an area of around 1,100 m².

In July 2022 the exhibition space was expanded with the opening of the G2 Schaulager. This extension increased the usable area from over 1,100 m² to more than 2,200 m². The Schaulager links storage and exhibition through an open depot wall system, which is surrounded by conventional exhibition areas and thus brings together display, storage, and event use.

Since March 2015 G2 Kunsthalle has permanently exhibited the Hildebrand Collection. The holdings include works by leading artists of the Leipzig scene such as Hans Aichinger, Katrin Brause, Henriette Grahnert, Paule Hammer, Uwe Kowski, Peter Krauskopf, Rosa Loy, Neo Rauch, Christoph Ruckhäberle, David Schnell, and Matthias Weischer. These are complemented by national and international positions, including Norbert Bisky, Miriam Cahn, Simon Fujiwara, Anne Imhof, Oscar Murillo, Daniel Richter, Tomás Saraceno, and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Since 2017 G2 Kunsthalle has also been directly supporting young artists: in collaboration with the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, the G2 Kunsthalle Meisterschülerpreis is awarded annually. The institution thus functions both as an exhibition venue and as a platform for artistic development and public projects.
